Body and Soul by Bethany Hamilton – Review and Giveaway

I don’t know about your kids, but AJ’s ideas about being healthy are far off. She is a gymnast and exercises all of the time so she thinks she can eat junk all of the time. Don’t get me wrong, she loves fruit and vegetables, but she also thinks she needs cookies and candy daily. Since we are with Grandma so much we are around sweets all of the time. Grandma loves her cookies and candy, and at 84 years old if she wants to eat candy every day no one is going to stop her. The problem is that cookies and candy every day are not healthy.

 It feels as if Bethany is sitting there sharing tips with you. I think it is a wonderful book for teens, tweens, and even adults.

At just 11 years old, I am already hearing, “I am going on a healthy diet tomorrow” at least once a month. Then she will go about half a day making good choices but by dinner she is asking for candy and I am telling her, no.

Enter a new book, Body and Soul written by Bethany Hamilton and her trainer. When I was asked to review this book I wasn’t sure it would be a great fit. I love Bethany’s story of faith and perseverance so I decided to check it out. You never really know what you are going to get in a health/diet book, especially one for kids. In fact I haven’t even let AJ look at it yet because I wanted to read through it and see what exactly it was all about. What did I think? I liked it so much, that the signed copy of Body and Soul is currently wrapped up and under the Christmas tree, with all of the Christmas treats and junk around this time of year I figured this book would make sense after the holidays.(As I am typing this she is eating a giant Christmas Sucker at 8 in the morning) I think that this book will be amazing for AJ!

*Update – She loves the book and can’t wait to try out some of the recipes! She has already done a few of the workouts, and we plan to read through the entire book together over the next month or so. I have to admit, she was even more excited about the book than I was expecting!*

This isn’t a book about Bethany, this is a book about wellness, becoming your best “you”, through physical and spiritual balance, because spiritual health is just as important as physical health. 

The book is 160 page full color soft cover book. It is broken into ten chapters, focusing on so much more than just diet and exercise.  It is really about living your best life. It is full of motivation and ideas. Throughout the book there are places to write things down like your 10 favorite things to do. Not only can you read the book, and record your thoughts, but this book is interactive too. Throughout the book when you come to a certain symbol you  can then open an app on your phone or tablet, scan the page and receive even more information about a topic.

There is an entire chapter devoted to exercise, with workout plans and step by step directions. I really love the fact that there are photos to go along with the exercises. Another chapter focuses on food. To be honest looking at the foods I thought that they were kind of odd. The recipes called for things like coconut flour, and a lot of kale.

Well, I bought some kale to try out the recipe for kale chips, and you know what, I LOVED them! I have had kale chips every day this week for lunch. AJ likes them too. The fact that we liked the kale chips gives me hope that we might enjoy some of the other recipes in the book. While I thought the food choices looked odd, they may be something that will work.

The recipes all seem fairly easy, and I am sure once you have a few of the uncommon ingredients on hand eating better would be easier.

What I really liked in the book was that Bethany states that you can look healthy and thin on the outside but be unhealthy inside, and that is something I think AJ needs to understand. There are no crazy fads in the book, just getting healthy through better food choices, exercise, and  focusing on God.

Body and Soul is an easy read and it feels as if Bethany is sitting there sharing tips with you. I think it is a wonderful book for teens, tweens, and even adults. It is a a book I could definitely recommend!
